SAINT LAURENT RIVE DROITE Los Angeles presents Liminal Reflections, an exhibition by American-Japanese artist Shingo Francis, curated by Anthony Vaccarello, on view from September 17 to November 11. Created specifically for this presentation, Liminal Reflections brings together a new body of work by the artist, unveiled here for the first time.
Born in 1969 in Santa Monica, California, Shingo Francis lives and works between Los Angeles and Kamakura, Japan. The son of Japanese artist Mako Idemitsu and American painter Sam Francis, he grew up between Tokyo and Santa Monica, immersed in the artistic traditions and visual cultures of both countries.
Drawing on Japanese concepts such as wabi-sabi and yūgen, Francis explores perception, light, and the experience of place through a process-based approach to abstraction. Using interference paints composed of titanium-coated mica particles, his paintings shift according to the viewer’s position and surrounding light, creating surfaces that are at once subtle and luminous. His work reflects an ongoing dialogue between traditional Japanese aesthetics and Southern California artistic influences, inviting a heightened awareness of time, space, and presence. The exhibition title, Liminal Reflections, refers to a transitional state, space, or moment suspended between two realities, where one phase has been left behind but the next has not yet fully emerged.
Francis’ work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Chigasaki Museum of Art (Japan), the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art (Japan), and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation (United States). Shingo Francis is represented by William Turner Gallery, Santa Monica.
