SAINT LAURENT Montaigne presents its first exhibition, 1980–2023–2025, a selection of works by French artist Martine Bedin, curated by Anthony Vaccarello, on view from July 3 to October 14.
Born in 1957 in Bordeaux, Martine Bedin lives and works in Paris. An architect and designer, she was a founding member of the Memphis group in Milan in the early 1980s, a movement that redefined the role of design by shifting the focus from function and production toward the expressive and symbolic presence of objects.
Over several decades, Bedin has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning design, painting, and sculpture. The exhibition brings together works from early Memphis drawings to recent pieces, where everyday objects are removed from their function and reconfigured as autonomous forms — “objects kept at the back of cupboards, which only come to life when needed”— engaging in a dialogue between reality and abstraction, with objects shifting between presence and illusion.
Her work has been widely exhibited at major international institutions, including Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and the Milan Triennale, and is held in prominent collections such as Centre Pompidou, Paris, SFMOMA, San Francisco, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, M+ Museum of Visual Culture, Hong Kong, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Martine Bedin is represented by Crèvecœur Gallery.
A selection of exhibited artworks will be available for sale.
