SAINT LAURENT RIVE DROITE Paris presents a selection of paintings by Yvonne Robert, curated by Anthony Vaccarello, on view from March 12.
Yvonne Robert is a German painter whose work is characterized by an intuitive, spontaneous, and gestural approach. Rooted in intuition and driven by instinct, Yvonne Robert’s paintings unfold as vibrant fields of color and gesture. Her practice embraces spontaneity, yet it is underpinned by a deep and assured understanding of composition, proportion, and chromatic balance.
Working on densely primed off-white canvases, Robert builds up layers of paint that generate both depth and luminosity, allowing bold hues and dynamic forms to emerge with striking clarity.
Formalist in nature, her work resists narrative, symbolism, or socio-political rhetoric. Instead, it proposes an open space of perception, where meaning is neither prescribed nor fixed. Robert’s paintings function as catalysts for introspection, inviting viewers to slow down, to feel, and to engage with the emotional resonance of color and movement. At the core of her practice lies a desire to create energy, a return to a natural, instinctive state where sensation precedes intellect. The experience of the painting itself becomes central : an encounter that encourages inward reflection and affirms the individuality of perception as a source of understanding.
Robert’s work intentionally refrains from engaging with overt conceptual frameworks. Rather, she offers a space in which viewers are invited to reflect inwardly and to arrive at their own interpretative positions.
